RLS Land Solutions does land clearing in Needville and across southeast Fort Bend County. We are a family outfit, the Comparettos, and we have run this work for 15 years. Our smallest excavator weighs 50,000 pounds. That size is what it takes on brush-choked land, where mesquite and huisache hold on with deep roots. We push the trees over and dig the root balls out. The pile gets loaded into our tandem dump trucks. The debris goes to our own dump site. When the crew pulls off, you have open ground you can put to work.
Most of our clearing runs by the acre. Ranchers hire us to take pasture back from brush that has taken over. Builders and developers hire us to open a tract before dirt work starts. We have cleared thousands of acres on utility-scale solar projects. Machines this size need room to work, so our jobs start around $10,000. Clearing starts with the biggest thing standing. An excavator in the 50,000 pound class gets under a tree and pushes it over. The root ball comes up with the trunk. Bigger timber gets the same treatment from a bigger machine. Once the trees are down, we take the brush between them. Everything gets pulled into piles the trucks can reach. The ground behind the machine comes out open, with holes where the root balls sat. We fill those and knock the spoil down so the tract sits close to level.
How fast a tract clears depends on what is on it. Open pasture with scattered huisache moves quick. A river bottom thick with hardwood and vine takes longer per acre. We look at the tract first and set the machine count to match the deadline. On big jobs we can run more than one shift. Some solar and commercial sites need dirt moving around the clock, and we staff for that. Our tandem dump trucks stay with the machines, so the piles get loaded as they build. Clearing and haul-off happen together.
We own a green-waste dump site, so cleared material has somewhere to go as it comes down. Trees, root balls and brush get loaded into our trucks and hauled there. Owning the site keeps the schedule in our hands. Clearing outfits that rent space at another dump run on that dump's hours. Our site is open to our trucks. That matters most on a big tract, where the debris runs into hundreds of loads. On your end the tract empties out while the machines are still running, so your fence line stays clear.
Some landowners would rather burn than haul. Burning is common on big rural tracts, and it can cut the cost when the material is dry. Burn bans come and go here, so we check the county before we plan on fire. We push the debris into piles set back from fence lines and structures. Then we burn them down and clean up the ash. Which way you go depends on the tract and what you want the ground for. On plenty of jobs we haul the timber and burn the brush.
Pasture in this part of Texas does not stay open on its own. Mesquite and huisache move into grazing land and thicken up within a few seasons. Yaupon fills the shade under the trees in the river bottoms. Chinese tallow takes the wet ground along creeks and ditches. Macartney rose runs the fence lines and the low spots. All of it comes back from the root, so cutting the top off buys a year or two. Getting the roots out is what keeps the pasture open long enough to be worth the money.
Ranch owners call us to take back pasture and open up roads through the brush. Builders and developers call us to clear a tract before pads and grading start. Solar developers have had us clear thousands of acres of open ground. The work runs from Needville and Guy over toward Damon, Boling and Wharton, and south into Brazoria County. Once a tract is clear we can keep going with grading or a pond, since the machines are already there. Bringing the machines out once costs less than bringing them out three times.
