Open country outside Lake Jackson does not stay open. Yaupon fills the shade under the hardwoods. Chinese tallow takes the wet ground along ditches and creek banks. Dwarf palmetto sits thick in the low spots near the river. All of it comes back from the root, so cutting the tops buys a season or two. We dig the roots out instead. An excavator gets under the stem, lifts, and rolls the root ball up with the trunk. Behind the machine you get open ground, with holes where the roots sat.
Pace depends on what is standing. Grazing land with scattered brush moves quickly. A bottomland tract thick with sugarberry, elm and vine takes longer per acre. The city was laid out around its trees, and plenty of lots still carry big live oaks. Clearing a homesite here is partly a question of what stays. We mark the oaks you want kept before a machine starts. Then we take the understory, the volunteer growth and the trees sitting where the house goes. Working close to a keeper tree means staying off the root zone with tracked weight. Our operators come in from the side and reach rather than drive across it. Low limbs get cleared for machine height before the truck route is set.
Once the lot is open, the stumps have to go. A stump left in place rots out over the next several years and leaves a soft pocket. Under a slab or a driveway, that pocket shows up later as a low spot or a crack. We pull the root balls and haul them off, so the ground you build on is uniform. After that we fill the holes and rough grade the lot. From there it is ready for fill and a pad, which is the next machine in the same yard.
We own the green waste dump we haul to, which is unusual in this work. Trees, root balls and brush get loaded and taken there. Haul off runs on our schedule instead of somebody else's gate hours. On a big tract, debris runs into hundreds of loads, and the dump is what slows most jobs down. Owning it means the tract empties while the machines are still cutting. The run from Lake Jackson goes up Highway 36 or 288 toward Fort Bend County. We build that haul into the price up front.
Some landowners would rather burn than haul, and on rural acreage that can cost less. Dry material burns down fast and the ash spreads back into the ground. Brazoria County burn bans come and go with the weather, so we check the county before planning on fire. When burning works, we pile debris well back from fence lines, structures and power lines. Then we burn the piles down and clean up behind them. On plenty of tracts we split it, burning the brush and hauling the timber and root balls.
