RLS Land Solutions does excavation in El Campo and across Wharton County. We are the Comparetto family, based in Needville, about 29 miles up the road. Fifteen years of this work has been ranch ground, farm ground and building sites. In El Campo that means clearing brush off rice and cattle land, hauling select fill for pads, digging stock tanks and grading flat prairie. Most of what we do is measured in acres and truckloads. Our smallest excavator weighs 50,000 pounds. We run large machines and a fleet of tandem dump trucks. El Campo sits on flat coastal prairie, about 105 feet above sea level. The town started as a railroad camp called Prairie Switch, and cowboys called it the Pearl of the Prairies. Rice and cattle built it, and both still set the shape of the land. Rice ground was leveled and diked for flood irrigation generations ago. Cattle ground carries Macartney rose and huisache along every fence. The dirt is heavy black clay that holds water and works slow when it is wet. Changing any of it takes real machines.

Land clearing is what most people call us for first. Rice ground and pasture both grow up in brush along the edges. After that comes fill. We sell and haul select fill, fill dirt, sand and sandy loam out of our own pits. House pads and ag buildings both sit on it. We build ponds and stock tanks for cattle operations. We do dirt work and grading, which on this prairie mostly means moving water off flat ground. We build ranch roads with base, and we run haul-off when a job makes spoil nobody wants.
Who calls us in El Campo splits into a few groups. Ranchers and farm operations make up a big part of it. Builders and developers call for pads and select fill. People buying acreage out here call about clearing and a homesite. Hunting leases run all over this rice prairie in the winter, and those places need roads and water too. Commercial jobs along the US 59 strip call for site work. Our machines start at 50,000 pounds, and moving them costs money, so our jobs start around $10,000. That is easy to hit on acreage or a job that takes a hundred loads of dirt.
Our pits sit in southeast Fort Bend County, near Needville. El Campo is about 29 miles from there, and most of the run is highway. US 59 is being brought up to Interstate 69 standards, and the stretch through El Campo already meets them. For us that means a wide, fast road for loaded tandems. Haul time is what makes dirt expensive on a job like this. A short, clean run keeps the cost per load down and keeps the trucks cycling. From 59 we get onto the FM roads and county roads that reach the fields.
We are open 24 hours. On volume jobs we have run three shifts to keep dirt moving. Farm and ranch work often has a window. You want the brush out before a burn ban, or a pad up before the rain sets in. Running at night gets that done. The machines and trucks stay on site until the work is done. We also own a green-waste dump site, so cleared trees and brush leave the property on our trucks. That keeps the schedule ours instead of somebody else's gate hours. Loaded trucks going one way and empties coming back is what a big dirt job looks like.
