RLS Land Solutions does dirt work and grading out of Needville in Fort Bend County. This is flat prairie country, and after a hard rain the water sits for days. Most grading work around here is drainage work at heart. We cut the high ground down, build the low ground up and pitch the surface toward an outfall. Our smallest excavators weigh 50,000 pounds, and a fleet of tandem dump trucks runs behind them. That is the size of machinery it takes to regrade acres of land in one go.
The Comparetto family has run this business for 15 years. Most of that time the work came from word of mouth and repeat customers. Fort Bend, Brazoria and Wharton counties sit on flat coastal prairie. There is very little natural fall, so rain has nowhere to run. Water pools in the low spots and stays until it soaks in or dries off. Landowners here call us about the same problem over and over: standing water. It drowns pasture, kills grass and turns a driveway into a rut. Grade is the fix. Land that drains has fall built into it, usually a slope you can barely see. Even a few inches of fall over a hundred feet keeps water moving.
We start by finding where the water wants to go. Sometimes there is an outfall already, like a roadside ditch, a creek or a bayou. Sometimes we have to cut one and carry it across the property. From there we shape the ground so every low area drains toward that point. That can mean cutting swales, crowning a field or building up a low corner with fill. We check the fall as we go so the slope holds across a long run. The goal is water that keeps moving after a storm instead of sitting on your land.
Every job starts with a look at the whole property. A wet spot is usually a symptom of grade somewhere uphill. We check elevations to see where the high and low points sit. Then we plan the cuts and the fills. Cutting a high area gives us material to move into a low one, which saves hauling. When a property does not have enough material of its own, we bring it in from our pits. We own two sand and dirt pits in southeast Fort Bend County. That keeps material cost and truck time under our control.
Fill goes down in lifts, which means layers of six to twelve inches at a time. Each lift gets spread and compacted before the next one goes on top. Dirt dumped in one deep pile will settle later and leave a low spot right back where you started. Once the fill is up to elevation, we make a finish pass to smooth the surface and true the slope. Large excavators do the cutting and loading, and our tandem dump trucks move the material. On a big regrade that can be hundreds of loads over several days.
Our minimum project is about $10,000. We are set up for acres, hundreds of truckloads and jobs that run for days. A small yard leveling job costs more to mobilize our equipment than the work is worth to you. Ranch owners bring us in to level pasture and pull water off their hay ground. Builders and developers use us for lot grading and rough grading before construction starts. Commercial sites call when the dirt volume is past what a small contractor can move. Homeowners with real acreage land in the same range.
We are open around the clock, and on volume work that matters. When a deadline is tight, we will run three shifts and keep dirt moving all night. Weather sets the pace more than anything, so a dry stretch is worth long hours. Grading rarely shows up alone on a property. The same trip often includes land clearing, a pond, a set of ranch roads or a building pad. We handle all of it with the same equipment and the same trucks. That keeps the schedule tight and the dirt moving between tasks.
