RLS Land Solutions runs excavation in Wharton, Texas, about 31 miles from our home base in Needville. Wharton is the county seat, and it sits on the Colorado River where US 59 comes through. Ground near the river is alluvial soil that the river laid down over a long time. Away from the bottoms you get loam, coastal clay and pockets of sand. That mix changes how dirt behaves. Clay holds water and moves with the weather. Sandy ground drains but will not hold a pond bank on its own. We read the dirt on site before we set a plan for grading or fill.
Rain is the other half of it. Wharton County averages about 42 inches a year, and it comes in hard bursts. Flat ground and 42 inches do not mix well without a path for water. Most of the dirt work we do here has a drainage piece to it. Fields need the low spots filled and the fall set toward a ditch. Homesites need the ground sloped away from the slab. We load select fill, fill dirt, sand and sandy loam at our own pits and haul it down ourselves. We set our own loading hours and we control the supply. On a job that runs hundreds of loads, that control is what keeps the trucks rolling. We also own a green waste dump site, so cleared trees and brush have a place to go. The material leaves your property and lands on ours.
